Biography
Riad Sattouf is a cartoonist and filmmaker.
After twice winning the Fauve d’or (award for best album of the year), in 2010 for Pascal Brutal and in 2015 for L’Arabe du futur, Riad Sattouf was elected by his peers to receive Grand Prix du Festival d’Angoulême in 2023, celebrating his entire oeuvre.
Born in 1978, he spent his childhood between Libya, Syria and Brittany. He studied applied art in Nantes and animation at the Gobelins School of the Image.
He has authored The Unlucky Adventures of Jérémie (Les Pauvres Aventures de Jérémie), Virgin Guide (Manuel du puceau), Back to Junior High (Retour au college), Pascal Brutal and The Secret Life of Youths (La Vie secrète des jeunes). Riad Sattouf is one of the few graphic novel authors to have won the Fauve d’or at the Angoulême festival twice (for Pascal Brutal 3 in 2010 and The Arab of the Future 1 in 2015).
Since 2014, he has been drawing Esther’s Notebooks (Les Cahiers d’Esther) for L’Obs every week, based on the true stories of a ten-year-old little girl called Esther A.
Riad Sattouf is also a filmmaker, directing The French Kissers (Les Beaux Gosses, César for best debut film) and Jacky in Women’s Kingdom (Jacky au royaume des filles).
