Up in Flames
Original title: En explosion devant nos yeux
Synopsis
“I deserve a bed. I’m thirsty, hungry, just like everyone else. And heating in winter; if you have to go to jail to be warm, well, I deserve to go to jail.”
Antoine, a popular TV writer, has been floundering ever since he lost his partner in a bicycle accident. When he wakes up in the middle of a giant park after a long night of drinking, he decides to rekindle a dormant flame: he’s going to make a masterpiece.
Inspired by Cynthia, a charismatic woman who’s so down on her luck that she’s camping with friends in the park, Antoine centres his new work of “living cinema” on her. He uses footage from cellphones, drones, and surveillance cameras to shed light on a glaring social issue: the housing crisis. Fuelling the squatters’ anger, he sets the stage for a scathing work of brilliant cinematography that’s sure to light a fuse…
“What should he do with the bombs? Is it safe to fall asleep next to the crate? In truth, he tells himself, it would be hard to be more careless than the construction guys. Didn’t he notice an ashtray on the table, between estimates and plans? They were probably smoking in here, this Dickie Moore cabin where he found the jackpot.”
A social commentary full of irony whose poignant, true-to-life characters bring readers to the epicentre of the global housing crisis. Hailed as one of the most highly-anticipated novels of the season by critics!
