Synopsis

“What’s my mic for? What purpose do I serve?” A story that juxtaposes the distress of a community with that of a rookie reporter, confronted with existential questions about her role, the pressure to perform, loneliness and competition between colleagues—which, fortunately, doesn’t prevent camaraderie.

This docu-comic is inspired by the author’s experiences as a journalist sent to cover the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami. After witnessing the efforts of major NGOs, she offers readers a different view of the catastrophe.

The drawings, with their raw lines, and the comic’s slightly cobbledtogether style, reimagine a tragedy of epic proportions, capturing and conveying the intensity of the drama and the acts of solidarity that followed.

At a time of when journalists are under scrutiny despite their central role, Sév strives to humanize the professionals who work in the field and build bridges with the public.
