Algiers, 1962. Adrien and Madeleine fall in love. Despite the looming Algerian independence, Adrien wants to stay. Madeleine wants to stay too: she works at the Museum of Fine Arts, restoring and looking after paintings by Delacroix, Ingres, Courbet, Monet, Renoir… But Madeleine is not who she says she is.

When the order comes to repatriate three hundred major works to the Louvre, a forgotten Venetian painting suddenly reappears. It resembled Giorgione’s Judith. This painting will never leave Madeleine’s possession. Caught up in the secrets of her past, she must flee to Argentina, where many of Algeria’s inhabitants have taken refuge. Years later, in Buenos Aires, Madeleine’s daughter Blanche retraces the steps of her mother’s life, uncovering her darkest secrets and discovering her true identity.
