How can the decision of one person impact the futures of so many, to such a harrowing extent? The struggle of two people to keep their heads above water, as a world of infinite possibilities closes in on them: Martijn struggles with his father’s dementia, and a gaping family secret. Sofie wants answers from a grandmother she’s never known. Separately, they unravel a history that gradually ties them together. Until a meeting is unavoidable.
The doctor confirmed the diagnosis with one hand laid over her stomach, and from then on, things moved very quickly. Before her dad had arrived home from work, her mother had already been in touch with a home for unwed mothers. Later that evening, they were seated at the dinner table ready to break the news. Her mother took the lead, nobody expected any different.
