A Balcony in Naples
Original title: Un balcon à Naples
Synopsis
This novel set in the heart of Naples explores family ties and takes us into the secrets of the city’s narrow streets.
Anita, a young French researcher of Italian origin, travels around Italy to write her thesis on the heroines of the Resistance. After Rome and Milan, her journey takes her in the footsteps of Maddalena Cerasuolo, a little-known figure from the Four Days of Naples, the popular uprising that liberated the city in 1943.
Anita settles into an inn built in the heart of Ponte Sanità, a hotbed of revolt, and discovers an enigmatic guidebook created by the owner, Gabriella, who invites her to explore the city through history and memory. Accompanied by Gabriella’s son Léon, Anita embarks on this unusual treasure hunt, following each clue through the neighbourhoods and monuments where the war left its mark. Little by little, she discovers that behind the archives, testimonies and historical sites lies a more intimate reality: that of a courageous and free woman whose destiny shook Naples and whose mysteries have been passed down through the generations.
Through the centuries, family wounds and secrets, the light of Naples illuminates a shared heritage: that of courage and forgiveness.
