The Taste of the Forest

Original title: Le Goût des forêts

Synopsis

In the heart of the forest, one can get lost but also be reborn.

Evelyne works as a receptionist at a contemporary art museum in Vitry. One day, in an impulsive gesture she herself cannot explain, she throws a work of art out of the window. This shattered sculpture marks the end of twelve years of work: redundancy, isolation, whole days spent watching television series.

Discreet, solitary and trapped in a dreary routine, she doesn’t let anyone get close to her, except Valentina, her warm-hearted neighbour, who is determined to break through her shell. As she sinks into depression, an unexpected call turns everything upside down: a solicitor informs her that she has inherited a fifty-hectare forest in Normandy from an uncle she barely knows.

Encouraged by Valentina, Évelyne leaves the city and heads into the woods. There, amid the rustling leaves and the silence of the clearings, she discovers a world she never knew: foraging, animal tracks, the patience of living things. Little by little, something inside her awakens.

In the silence of nature, Évelyne learns that sometimes you have to lose yourself in order to find yourself again. The forest could well become the breeding ground for her blossoming into the world.

A novel steeped in solitude, vanilla-scented wild plants, encounters, and the healing power of nature.
