‘‘Robben’s style is deceptively simple. You don’t have to be an adult to read Summer Coat, yet Robben’s imagery, subtle humour and surprising plot will connect with the most literate of readers. The novel gives a moving insight into a boyhood that gives pause for reflection.’ –De Standaard

‘Subtle and refined.’ NRC Handelsblad

‘A writer who crosses the ball with such elegance that there’s no need to hammer it home.’ De Volkskrant

‘His first novel Birk was well received, won prizes and became a sales success. Summer Coat is a worthy successor and has all the ingredients to follow the same path. […] Robben knows how to write simply and magnificently – I kept underlining beautiful sentences in the first chapters.’ Trouw

Thirteen-year-old Brian lives with his father in a caravan on a remote plot. Brian’s mentally and physically disabled brother Lucien has been admitted to an institution. Because of a renovation during the summer it is necessary for Lucien to be cared for elsewhere. Brian’s father, mainly motivated by the prospect of receiving compensation, brings Lucien to the caravan and puts young Brian in charge of his brother’s care.

But how to talk to someone who does not speak? How to care for someone if you do not know what they need? How to make the right choices if you still have so much to discover yourself?
