What do women think about when they’re making love?

At the instant that I am writing these lines, six thousand people are making love. As the minutes tick by, the number is growing; people are hugging, kissing, and intertwining. Maybe they’re bored, maybe they’re coming. They may have gotten together an hour ago… or twenty years ago. They are between 15 and 80 years old, give or take a few years; they’re truly in love, or not really. But one on top of the other, one behind the other; in pairs, trios or more, they are coupling.

I started thinking about them as I was wandering around my neighborhood alone with my thoughts one day. I raised my eyes to a few apartment buildings, and wondered behind which windows carnal acts were taking place, and what the women were thinking at that precise moment. About pleasure? The past? Their shopping lists, their pregnancy tests, their lovers, their own bodies? So I wrote these snippets from real life, I wrote about sex from inside women’s heads.

Caroline Michel writes for women’s magazines, and has a blog, ovary.fr, about the subjects she cares about deeply: human relationships and passing time. Her début novel, 89 mois (89 Months) was published in 2016.
