When science finds out that the mind changes the body

We are all more or less aware of the fact that our state of mind has a great deal of influence over our bodies. But we may not be aware that our very state of mind and thoughts – whether we are happy or relaxed, for example – changes the workings and the structure of the brain and can thus be beneficial to our health.

This is what scientists have found out as they begin to understand the way in which “new medicine” works. Hypnosis, acupuncture, cognitive remediation, neurofeedback, EMDR, Qi-Gong and music therapy – to name but a few – are having a growing role to play in the field of healthcare.

They have many applications: curing mental trauma; attenuating chronic pain; treating anxiety, epilepsy and hyperactivity; avoiding the secondary effects of drugs; curbing cardiac diseases…

This involves prevention as well as cure. Meditation, relaxation, positive thinking and improving one’s lifestyle all have a beneficial effect on the brain and the body, and can prevent one from falling ill. By taking account of the link between body and mind, we can all gain control of our well-being and our health.
