Cirque mort is a detective novel about a father’s quest to find his son. While investigating the disappearance of two boys, Lieutenant Dapper learns that his son has failed to return home after school. Shortly afterwards, an event occurs that horrifies the inhabitants of the small town: all the animals in a visiting Christmas circus are massacred with an axe. Dapper’s son is still missing and he is taken off the disappearance case, but he perseveres and follows up the clue of an anonymous letter. It takes him to a hospital for young psychotics where he meets Ilyas, who claims to have been a friend of Théo. This gives Dapper renewed hope, although he realises that there are certain things about his son that he was unaware of.

In this psychoanalytical thriller, Gilles Sebhan takes us into the mind of a man whose world is gradually falling apart. Dapper is willing to do anything to find his son, even at the cost of letting go of the rationality and defence of the law which has underpinned his career for fifteen years.
